Addiction can sometimes be a way of numbing the pain that is experienced as a result of not caring for one’s own physical well-being.   1. Psychological self-care

Sometimes addiction can result from combatting the pain caused by psychological abuse. Psychological abuse can cause a person to feel inferior. Similar to emotional self-care, individuals who are in recovery from substance abuse must take the steps needed to nurture psychological health after treatment.

Self-care is a very important part of the substance abuse recovery process. Self-care looks slightly different for each patient. Some individuals may need to learn to take better care of themselves financially, while others need to take steps to take better care of their health. Successful substance abuse treatment can help identify the types of self-care that are necessary while developing strategies to deal with obstacles that may pop up along the way.
