Don Peters, M.A., M.S.
Don Peters is a recovering alcoholic/addict with continuous sobriety dating from March, 1981. Following his first year of recovery he returned to school, and hasn’t left yet…
He has served treatment centers and psychiatric hospitals for more than 30 years as a Chemical Dependency Counselor, Therapist, Family Therapist and Clinical Consultant. On the research front he has investigated the association between exercise and addiction craving (Thayer and Peters, 1987) and subsequently has been associated with the U.C.L.A. Neuropsychiatric Institute’s Drug Abuse Research Center.
Don has authored Relapse Response Review, a distillation of principles gleaned from Alcoholics Anonymous, Clinical, Research, Social, Applied and Performance psychologies. He is currently in dissertation for his Ph.D. in Psychology, Specialization in Sport Psychology and as an athlete and former professional singer/actor brings principles of Performance Psychology into recovery, dramatically demonstrating that achieving and maintaining sobriety utilizes very similar strategies and abilities to function under pressure as do elite athletes and performers.
In private practice, Don has founded The Next Level: Performance Under Pressure and through his agency has worked with Olympic, professional and NCAA Division-1 student-athletes. Don resides in Lakewood, California with Abigail W., a Golden Retriever who fancies herself a Therapy Dog (she does seem to help folks feel better).
