Above all else, we want our clients to be safe and comfortable. We recommend that our clients suffering from dependency upon substances like heroin, benzodiazepines, or meth, or who suffer from withdrawal while trying to abstain from these drugs, attend a reputable detox program.

Our treatment center in St. Louis, Missouri, does not offer detoxification, but upon entering our treatment center, our physicians and clinicians assess clients to discern their specific needs based on their physical and mental health and history. Many of our clients start their journey in a detoxification program in order to rid their body of illicit substances in a safe, supportive, and monitored environment and then. Others, however, may immediately enter our outpatient treatment program.

The average length of time each client stays in detox is approximately seven days. In that time, clients are monitored by doctors, nurses, clinicians, and staff to ensure their comfort and safety.

During this difficult phase of treatment, clients have usually just stopped using drugs and may experience dangerous withdrawal symptoms and intense cravings. With 24-hour monitoring and care, clients are led by our staff through their early recovery journey. Clients may be medically monitored in this level of care through the following services:

  • Withdrawal management
  • Medication management
  • Full medical evaluation
  • Full psychiatric evaluation
  • Frequent vitals checks
  • Individual therapy
  • Group therapy
  • Access to nurses day or night

After detoxification, clients can move on to either a residential treatment program, or outpatient treatment at Hotel California by the Sea, St. Louis.

Our comprehensive outpatient program is designed to make the recovery process smooth and enjoyable for each and every client. With our highly educated treatment team and Joint Accredited facility, our clients are in good hands when embarking on their road to recovery.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

When it comes to relapse prevention planning, curbing cravings for illicit substances can be a literal life saver for many clients. That is why our program involves medication-assisted treatment, or MAT for short. Our MAT program utilizes FDA approved medications to curb cravings and directly impact drug use by dampening the effects of illicit substances.

The doctors will meet with each client multiple times to educate and discuss the benefits of MAT. Some examples of such medications are:

  • Naltrexone
  • Suboxone
  • Vivitrol
  • Anti-buse

These medications can be administered in pill or injectable form; some of them only have to be administered a couple times a year to maintain efficacy. We have found that if utilizing their clinical team, medical team, and MAT medications, our clients have a higher rate of success.

Outpatient Treatment

Once our clients have completed any higher level of care necessary, they then step down to our partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient (IOP) levels of care. Here, they will begin to reintegrate into their community as sober citizens.

Our partial hospitalization program and intensive outpatient program both give our clients the freedom of living independently and the security of having immediate access to their treatment team. This slow integration back into the community (usually lasting 2 months or more) is an imperative step in the treatment process for our clients in order to build a successful future for themselves, while still maintaining a healthy routine in sobriety.

Types of Therapy

In order to treat our clients substance use disorders, we take a holistic approach that utilizes evidence-based substance abuse treatment modalities to address all areas of our clients lives. This includes a wide variety of therapeutic techniques and approaches.

Group therapy

Group therapy makes up the bread and butter of substance abuse treatment. In a group of peers, clients will engage with the therapist and their peers as they work through the issues that led to their addictions. Hearing others process tough emotions and get vulnerable with one another can be indispensable in the journey of recovery. This format also allows the therapist to teach various coping and communication skills which will help throughout the process of treatment.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)

CBT is a widely practiced form of talk therapy. The aim of CBT is to help our clients identify and change any irrational or harmful beliefs or patterns they might have. CBT provides clients with coping mechanisms and skills they can use to navigate daily life. Many of our clients also suffer from clinical anxiety or depression, and CBT can help to tackle some of the issues these afflictions might cause as well.

Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT)

DBT is a form of CBT that focuses on more extreme issues  like mood and impulse control, risk-taking, and self-destructive behaviors. DBT focuses on mindful awareness and acceptance. This can be a vital part of helping our client’s navigate strong cravings in early recovery, as they must manage their impulses in a healthy way to get and stay clean. This type of therapy is also helpful for those who suffer from various personality disorders such as BPD.

Marriage and Family Therapy

Many of our clients have familial issues, and we have therapists who specialize in marriage and family therapy for this reason. Drug addictions wreak havoc on both the addicts and their families and loved ones. We hold family sessions over the phone so that a therapist can moderate difficult conversations and help start a productive dialogue. Whether it’s a spouse, child, or another family member, marriage and family therapy is important for our clients to develop a sense of recovery support back home while they’re in treatment.

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is a form of evidence-based therapy used to treat symptoms of intense trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). EMDR can act as a form of guided exposure therapy in which the therapist helps a client relive and reprocess a past trauma in order to change their relationship with the event. This provides an opportunity for our clients to overcome traumas and fears that can have crippling emotional effects on their lives.
