Outpatient Drug and Alcohol Rehab in Orange County, CA

Outpatient rehab offers a mixture of behavioral therapy treatments as well as patient advocate services. In this less intense level of care, patients are most likely seeking guidance on how to successfully transition back into society with a clear mind and new outlook to their future. As a long term continuation of inpatient rehab, outpatient addiction treatment programs provide recovering addicts with a central support system of like-minded peers.

What is Outpatient Rehab?

During outpatient drug treatment, patients are provided with a more flexible schedule to participate in continuing counseling and behavioral therapies to help maintain sobriety. This less intensive level of care is usually recommended after a patient is discharged from an inpatient or residential rehab facility. For patients to successfully maintain sobriety, long-term treatment services such as cognitive behavioral therapy and marriage and family counseling, is highly encouraged. Outpatient treatments such as partial hospitalization program (PHP) and intensive outpatient program (IOP) offer a variety of services for those seeking continuing support for their recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.

Once patients have completed residential treatment and are ready to step down in level of care, they are usually moved into a PHP or IOP where they participate in various substance abuse treatment programs. For PHP, patients usually spend about six hours per day in treatment programs. For IOP, patients spend an estimated three hours per day in treatment programs. Candidates for PHP are usually patients who have completed residential treatment but are still at high risk for potential relapse.

Patients who move onto IOP treatment are usually those who no longer need immediate and intense monitoring of their addiction and want to start implementing newly learned skills into daily life free of drugs and alcohol. Depending on the recommendations from their treatment care plan, patients are able to go to addiction treatment sessions anywhere from six hours a day to fifteen hours per week and then able to return home at the end of each day. Once PHP and IOP have been completed, patients move on to an outpatient drug rehab where they continue to attend counseling and therapy treatments scheduled around their daily responsibilities or as recommended by their medical physician.

At Hotel California by the Sea, we offer outpatient day programs and night programs for patients to choose from. As patients slowly return to a new routine, they are offered flexible options in receiving and continuing addiction treatment programs and services.

How are Outpatient and Inpatient Rehab different?

Inpatient rehab programs focus on medication management and intensive individual and group therapies. When enrolled into inpatient facilities, patients will receive 24-hour care and support, a comprehensive treatment plan, daily assessments from nurses and medical physicians, as well as a safe and structured environment to begin addiction recovery. This however leaves little room for continuing other personal responsibilities such as a job. The patient’s main job and responsibility is to focus completely on addiction treatment and learning new skills and coping techniques to live a life free of addictive substances.

In comparison to an outpatient alcohol rehab, the patient is still able to continue seeking counseling and therapies all while being able to maintain a job and engage in other day-to-day activities outside of a clinical environment. Patients are able to work around a flexible treatment schedule and still be able to receive high standards of care from the outpatient program. Because outpatient alcohol rehab does not require around the clock monitoring and patients do not live on the premise of the facility, they will receive less intensive care and sometimes be tempted back into addiction relapse. However, before entering into an outpatient drug rehab, all patients are assessed by medical physicians and psychologists to make sure this step down in level of care is appropriate for the patient.

Specialized Services offered in Outpatient Drug Rehab

The services offered in outpatient drug rehab are effective tools and resources for patients as they continue to seek treatment and maintain sobriety. Though voluntary, patients are highly encouraged to take advantage of services such as education planning for their professional career, nutritional counseling to help with their health and wellness and access to their client advocate to understand their specific case management process. The following are popular outpatient services offered to patients during their treatment program:

Psychiatric Assessments from a medical physician

In many outpatient alcohol rehab programs, regular psychiatric evaluations from certified medical physicians help determine the necessary continuing treatment plan for each patient. Despite completion of detox and residential treatment programs, some patients may still be vulnerable to withdrawal symptoms or even urges for relapsing. Because of this, psychiatric evaluations are important to address these delicate situations and a medication-assisted treatment (MAT) will be prescribed. Medical physicians may also suggest different forms of behavioral therapies to address the patient’s co-occurring mental health issues. This will help ensure the patient remains on the right track during their rehab journey and continue to maintain sobriety.

Dual Diagnosis therapy

Outpatient drug treatment is recommended for those with co-occurring mental health conditions. Substance use disorder (SUD) often occurs concurrently with mental health issues, making it difficult for patients in rehab to cope. Patients who suffer from these issues are experiencing what is called a dual diagnosis or co-occurring mental health concerns. Some common mental health disorders often linked to or occur with SUD include: attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder, personality disorder, depression, eating disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

According to the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, an estimated 9.5 million adults in the U.S. experience a substance use disorder and a mental health illness.

Patients experiencing a secondary mental health diagnosis tend to succeed in an outpatient alcohol rehab program. By addressing psychological conditions and substance use disorders simultaneously, patients have an increased probability of maintaining their recovery.

Career Counseling and Educational Planning

For many young adults, their education and career may have been put on hold once they entered into a substance rehab program. Outpatient alcohol rehab offers guidance to help patients achieve their professional goals through unique services such as career counseling and continuing education planning. Together with certified counselors, licensed therapists and mentors, patients will work to identify their professional goals. Patients will eventually learn how to successfully integrate into their new drug free life, all while working to achieve career and educational goals.

At Hotel California by the Sea, we offer a career resource program that focuses on the following aspects:

  • Accountability
  • Career-specific feedback
  • Resume assistance
  • Stress management in the professional world
  • Goal-setting
  • Vocational and professional skill development

Other individuals in outpatient rehab may need assistance with basic everyday life skills after being under the cloud of their addiction for so long. Outpatient drug treatment focuses on helping individuals understand and control their addiction as well as help them adjust to their new everyday lives.

Some of the themes addressed in outpatient life skills development include:

  • Financial literacy
  • Time management and balance
  • Coping skills
  • Medication management
  • Nutrition
  • Conflict resolution

Substance Addiction Therapies used in Outpatient Rehab

Similar to inpatient addiction programs, outpatient rehab relies on various types of addiction treatment methods including clinically proven therapies. Patients begin these therapies during inpatient and residential treatment. As patients move to lower levels of care, they are encouraged to continue recommended therapies as part of their long term recovery.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) – DBT was originally created to help patients suffering from borderline personality disorder. It has since been modified to help with other mental health disorders where individuals learn coping mechanisms to manage painful emotions associated with their addiction. The skills learned through DBT help individuals in improving their ability to regulate their negative emotions, being more mindful in the present moment and effectively communicating with others. DBT focuses on helping patients understand and manage the negative emotional reactions related to their drug and alcohol addiction.

EMDR

EMDR – Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy focuses on helping patients change their emotions, thoughts and behaviors in the brain associated with their addiction. This type of therapy is used to help a patient reprocess their trauma so they no longer have any fears or negative connotations associated with the specific aspect of their life. EMDR is treated in eight different phases.

  • History and treatment planning
  • Preparation
  • Assessment
  • Desensitization
  • Installation
  • Body scan
  • Closure
  • Reevaluation

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – CBT is a psychological therapy treatment used to change thinking patterns as well as change behavioral patterns. For patients suffering from addiction, changing the ways in which they associate with their addiction and changing the ways in which they react when faced with their addiction is the goal of CBT. Some of the core principles of CBT state that psychological problems are based on unhelpful ways of thinking, learned patterns of unhelpful behaviors and learning more effective ways of coping with problems will help relieve those who are suffering.

Group Therapy

Group Therapy – Group therapy is a form of psychotherapy performed in a group setting with others who are experiencing the same struggle and journey with substance addiction. These group sessions are meant to be a safe and confidential environment for patients to listen, share and support each other in similar situations.

Marriage and Family Counseling

Marriage and Family Counseling – Marriage and family counseling is a common form of therapy meant to address the patient and their loved ones. In counseling, patients and their families or significant others, may learn effective ways to communicate with each other, set healthy boundaries and how to work past any setbacks that may occur during the patient’s recovery process.

Health and Fitness Groups

Engaging in exercise and physical activity can help your brain naturally produce positive endorphins, making you feel good and giving you motivation to maintain a healthy lifestyle away from addictive substances. Improving your physical health plays a large factor in being able to improve your substance recovery health. A combination of behavioral therapies along with physical fitness, helps rehab clinicians create a more holistic treatment plan for patient recovery.
