Dangers Of Detoxing From Alcohol On Your Own
Detoxing from alcohol, especially when physically dependent, can be an unpleasant and even dangerous affair. If you or your loved one is trying to quit alcohol cold-turkey, there can be devastating results. Here at our alcohol abuse treatment center in St. Louis, Missouri, we at HCBTS understand the genuine risks involved with the cessation of alcohol. Although we do not offer detoxification services at this time, we can point you in the right direction as to where you can attend detoxification at one of our other locations.
There is a lot that can go wrong when one is highly dependent upon alcohol and tries to quit the drug without professionals’ help. Unlike most other substances, long-term alcohol abuse lowers the brain’s threshold for seizures. This means that when someone who is physically dependent upon alcohol ceases their alcohol use, they may be at a high risk of seizures for up to 3 or more days. Unfortunately, these seizures can be life-threatening.
Other dangerous forms of alcohol-withdrawal complications exist, including a phenomenon known as delirium tremens, or DTs. Quitting alcohol after heavy long term use can cause delirium tremens if not adequately monitored. DTs affect the body’s nervous system and may present up to three to five days after quitting alcohol.
Some symptoms of DTs include:
- Delirium or sudden confusion
- Severe tremor
- High blood pressure
- Mood changes
- Irregular sleep
Our highly-trained and skilled team at HCBTS understands the hazards and discomfort associated with alcohol detoxification. At HCBTS’s locations across the United States, we monitor every client in our detoxification level of care for the warning signs of alcohol withdrawal complications and treat them accordingly. This way, our clients can focus on what’s important: getting sober and rebuilding their lives.
Alcohol Abuse Treatment Levels of Care at HCBTS, St. Louis
Hotel California by the Sea in St. Louis, Missouri, currently offers outpatient care to clients looking to recover from alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency. Our other locations in California, Washington, and Ohio offer detoxification programs and residential treatment – two forms of inpatient alcohol abuse treatment that can help you or your loved one get sober and eventually transition to outpatient care.
Our comprehensive recovery program caters to both men and women who find themselves suffering from drug and alcohol addiction. Our team is a group of highly educated and experienced professionals in addiction and alcohol abuse treatment and includes doctors, nurses, therapists, case managers, and technicians. Our staff members work to ensure our clients’ experience with substance abuse treatment is comfortable and safe.
We recommend beginning their road to recovery in our detoxification level of care for people using drugs daily, heavily, or for an extended period. In detox, clients are monitored by doctors, nurses, and technicians who are vigilantly assessing and treating any withdrawal symptoms. Hotel California by the Sea in St. Louis does not offer detox at this time, however, our other locations across the United States do.
One of the first things that occurs in HCBTS’ multiple detox centers is an in-depth assessment of the client’s medical history and alcohol consumption. The client then meets with the doctor and is evaluated regarding their risk of withdrawal potential. They have then prescribed medication that helps limit the danger and discomfort of alcohol withdrawal. Our clients take anywhere from 7 to 10 days at this level of alcohol abuse treatment care to complete their detoxification. During that week, they are encouraged to rest and relax as they have everything handled with their best interest in mind.
Our talented alcohol abuse treatment staff members work diligently together to provide world-class care for each client. Our nurses are consistently monitoring each client and reporting back to the doctor if any medication adjustments need to be made. Medications are managed for each client so that they don’t have to worry about a thing while completing one of the hardest parts of their recovery.
Once our doctors and nurses are satisfied that the risk of alcohol withdrawal complications has passed, the next stage we recommend at HCBTS is a residential level of inpatient care. In residential alcohol abuse treatment, clients are still monitored 24/7. However, in this level of care they are introduced to more of the evidence-based treatment modalities used to treat alcohol addiction, including:
Clients typically stay at the residential level of care for around 30 days, but sometimes longer. In that time, they are provided the tools and therapeutic support they’ll need to begin putting the pieces of their life back together. They learn and practice new healthy coping skills to help them manage their cravings and triggers. They start building up their sober-support network outside of alcohol abuse treatment by attending AA, NA, and/or other 12-step meetings.
Once people are safe from withdrawal, aware of what sobriety entails, and begin seeking tools that will help keep them sober, they may then enter our outpatient program.
Our outpatient alcohol abuse treatment consists of the partial hospitalization program (PHP) and the intensive outpatient program (IOP) of care. Once our clients move into our outpatient program, they are given more freedom to reintegrate into the community using the foundation they built in residential.
Our outpatient alcohol abuse treatment program assists clients in continuing with group therapy, family therapy, and individual therapies that began in residential. At this level, once our clients complete treatment for the day, they return home to an independent living environment. Our outpatient program (including partial and intensive outpatient) usually lasts around 60 days.
During this time, our clients still have complete access to their therapists, nurses, and doctors. Yet, now they also have the autonomy to look for jobs, enjoy the local culture, or visit family and friends after completing therapy for the day.
Our outpatient alcohol abuse treatment program phases provide increasing autonomy within the community while continuing to give support as our clients maintain their newfound sobriety. From start to finish, our progressive and intuitive alcohol abuse treatment program eases each client from alcohol dependence to independence in a matter of months.
