Substance Abuse Cognitive Behavioral Therapy At HCBTS
Our Southern California rehab center uses a client-centric and dynamic approach to treating addiction in men, women, and young adults. Within that process, we use several different clinically-proven treatment modalities in our treatment programs. One of these modalities is Substance Abuse Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or “talk therapy,” contributes to our clients’ recovery from substance use disorders and other co-occurring mental illnesses. CBT was created by psychological experts to reconstruct negative thought patterns and improve patients’ overall wellbeing and quality of life.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy helps clients gain insight into their negative thoughts or unhealthy thought patterns. Over 1,000 studies have been conducted by researchers on the unparalleled efficacy of CBT, boasting consistently-high success rates in clients.
If you or a loved one is struggling with drug or alcohol addiction, Substance Abuse Cognitive Behavioral Therapy may become a large part of your recovery journey. Learn more about Hotel California by the Sea’s Cognitive Behavioral Therapy addiction treatment below.
What Is Substance Abuse Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?
Hotel California by the Sea emphasizes individual-based treatment, meaning that we tailor our clients’ treatment plans to fit their unique needs. We don’t take a typical “one size fits all approach” because not every addict and alcoholic has the same history or biological makeup as the next.
Substance Abuse Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (casually referred to as “talk therapy”) is a treatment modality used by behavioral health specialists in recovery centers across the United States. Many therapists practice CBT independently or outside of treatment facilities as well
While clients are in inpatient treatment at Hotel California by the Sea, they’ll generally meet with their therapists at least two times a week. Be aware that this frequency could change based on the needs of the particular client.
Meetings at least two times a week allow clients to remain focused on their internal work and remain consistently fighting their addictive patterns. They may also discuss and work through trauma, anxiety, or self-destructive habits that often accompany early sobriety and fuel addiction.
Hotel California by the Sea offers Substance Abuse Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, alongside other types of therapies, such as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). When used in conjunction with one another, each of these therapies forms a well-rounded approach to addiction treatment.
CBT can last anywhere from 30-60 minutes, depending on the individual client being treated and their specific conditions. In CBT sessions, clients might work on reframing their cognitive “stories” and self-dialogue and combating negative thoughts.
History Of CBT
Specialists began practicing CBT with patients in the 1960s. According to the Beck Institute of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, “Cognitive Therapy (CT), or Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), was pioneered by Dr. Aaron T. Beck in the 1960s, while he was a psychiatrist at the University of Pennsylvania.”
Substance Abuse Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is based on the psychological idea of behaviorism and exists to improve internal thought processes and overall quality of life. Basically, CBT stems from the idea that internal mental processes can be observed and interpreted from external behavior. However, CBT goes further in-depth than observation and into a strategic conversation.
In his early research, Dr. Aaron T. Beck studied the prominence of “automatic thoughts” in people suffering from depression. In other words, he found ways to measure depressed individual’s knee-jerk thought patterns – thought patterns that might contribute to their mental illness.
The Beck Institute of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy states that CBT is “based on the cognitive model: the way that individuals perceive a situation is more closely connected to their reaction than the situation itself.”
By studying these patterns, he was able to spot certain maladaptive patterns in someone’s thought processes. And this is what Hotel California by the Sea focuses on. If we can help a client spot where their thoughts are destructive or maladaptive, we can frequently help them overcome their addictions permanently.
Benefits Of CBT At Hotel California by the Sea
CBT has been found as highly effective for treating certain mental conditions by researchers in over 1,000 studies since the 1960s.
Many of Hotel California by the Sea’s patients suffer from co-occurring disorders alongside their substance use disorder. One benefit of CBT is that it can treat multiple mental conditions at the same time. Someone with a dual diagnosis, or co-occurring mental health condition, can especially benefit from participating in CBT.
To thoroughly overcome addiction and ensure long-lasting sobriety, addiction experts must approach healing from multiple angles. CBT helps our clients in the following ways:
- Clients identify destructive and unhealthy thought patterns, habits, and more.
- Clients and therapists form a relationship working together for the benefit of the client’s recovery.
- Clients work on multiple mental conditions at the same time.
- Clients can deal with grief and loss, traumatic events, relationship issues, and various other ordinary life issues.
Treating Mental Illnesses With Substance Abuse Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Besides treating addiction, Substance Abuse Cognitive Behavioral Therapy also helps people suffering from a variety of mental health conditions. CBT can help people who suffer from:
- Anxiety Disorders, such as Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and Panic Disorder
- Major Depression
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

What Do I Do In CBT?
In CBT, you may learn anything from how to healthily deal with negative emotions, reverse maladaptive thought patterns (mentioned above) and map out the best coping strategies for turning negative thoughts into positive, constructive self-dialogue.
Generally, a therapist will sit with a client for an agreed amount of time and commence sessions. As time goes on, you and your therapist might develop a comprehensive plan for what clients would like to accomplish in treatment and what they might want to work on or improve.
Therapists can often provide clients with the tools to cope with traumatic memories, anxious moments or panic attacks, and cravings for their drug of choice.
