Moving forward after detox, our inpatient residential and outpatient treatment programs are led by medical physicians to guide patients in the rehab process. Some of the drug rehab programs include treatment for prescription drugs, methamphetamine and fentanyl. Our alcohol rehab programs are also tailored to each patient’s individual needs.

What is Rehab?

Substance rehabilitation is the process in which individuals learn to maintain and improve their health in order to live without the dependency of drugs and alcohol. Individuals suffering from Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) often seek out rehab to assist in treating their addiction. These individuals often have a co-occurring diagnosis and need to be treated for both substance detox as well as mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. Once the patient has fully detoxed from the addictive substances, rehab focuses on therapies and counseling to treat the psychological damage created from excessive use of drugs and alcohol.

When patients enter into a drug and alcohol rehab program, they are first admitted into an inpatient facility where they will undergo a drug detox treatment. Once drug and alcohol detox have been completed, patients will move onto a residential treatment program where they will receive continuing care through counseling and behavioral therapies. Patients will gradually move to an outpatient level of care, participating in PHP (partial hospitalization) or IOP (intensive outpatient) treatment programs. Throughout each step of the process, medical physicians and certified psychologists guide patients as they learn to live without the dependence of drugs and alcohol.

Who is a candidate for Drug and Alcohol rehab?

Individuals who have become so dependent on drugs or alcohol to function in daily life are the best candidates for rehab. Excessive and long-term usage of addictive substances will create a physical dependency on these drugs and alcohol to function in daily life. Over time, these substances will also begin to alter brain function affecting an individual’s mental health and wellness. This dual diagnosis is a key factor in recognizing a candidate for substance and alcohol rehab.

Substance and alcohol addiction can affect anyone: men, women and young adults. Each group of people have specific life experiences and challenges they face in relation to their addiction. Hotel California by the Sea offers specialized programs which are again individualized for each patient who enters our drug rehab facility.

Addictions treated by Rehab

At Hotel California by the Sea, our facilities offer drug and alcohol rehab for a variety of substance abuse addictions including:

We also have treatment programs for patients suffering from trauma related addiction as well as focusing on treatment for dual diagnosis mental health disorders.

Alcohol Rehab

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is defined by an inability to stop or control the usage of alcohol consumption where it negatively affects the social, emotional and physical aspects of daily life. Some of the signs to look for in a person who is in need of alcohol rehab include: when an individual has given up activities they once enjoyed in order to drink, when an individual continues to drink despite it making them feel more depressed and anxious, and when an individual begins experiencing a physical urge and dependence to drink.

In some cases with heavy drinkers, suddenly stopping or significantly reducing the amount of alcohol intake can cause Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome (AWS). When this occurs, medically monitored alcohol detox is necessary for the health and well being of the patient.

Alcohol rehab centers provide patients with targeted treatment programs addressing AUD with detox and supportive counseling and therapy. Patients will safely detox with the help of medical physicians as well as treat other co-occurring mental health issues related to their alcohol addiction.

Prescription Drug Rehab

One of the most widely abused substances in the United States, prescription drugs can be a dangerous addiction. Individuals who start with prescription drug abuse usually move on to “harder” drugs such as heroin or fentanyl. Patients seeking drug rehab for prescription drug abuse are commonly using substances such as Adderall or Ativan.

In drug rehab programs, patients are offered multiple levels of care with inpatient residential treatments as well as outpatient treatment programs. Following the initial detox phase, patients then move forward with several different therapies addressing their addiction as a whole. Some effective therapies include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Group Therapy

Trauma is an involuntary emotional and bodily response to a disturbing or distressing event. Addiction and trauma often come hand in hand. Individuals who experience traumatic incidents are often diagnosed with acute stress disorder (ASD) or post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and usually turn to alcohol or drugs to provide temporary relief from their disorders. This is also known as a dual diagnosis in which the patient is suffering from a substance abuse addiction as well as one or more mental health disorders.

At Hotel California by the Sea, we offer personalized trauma related rehab programs for men, women and young adults. Each group of patients have specific needs that are fully addressed by our medical physicians in the rehab centers throughout Orange County, California.

What are Levels of Care?

Level of care refers to the intensity of services needed to diagnose and treat alcohol and drug abuse. This assessment is made when patients are admitted into a drug and alcohol rehab program. The spectrum in level of care ranges from carefully monitored 24 hour services in a medically managed inpatient treatment program to less intensive therapies in outpatient care. Most patients seeking drug and alcohol rehab start with intensive inpatient service and eventually work their way through the care system to the outpatient level of care.

In this level of care, patients can seek out treatment while still being able to live at home. Patients will receive outpatient treatment anywhere from three to six hours per week depending on their own daily schedule or recommendation from their medical physician. Some examples of continuing services include therapy and addiction support groups. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, EMDR and family support therapies are effective services utilized by patients in outpatient care. Usually patients with less severe symptoms of addiction or patients who have already completed inpatient treatment programs will opt for this level of care.

Intensive Outpatient/Partial Hospitalization

Similar to the outpatient level of care, intensive outpatient/partial hospitalization programs require more hours of treatment per week. This is most beneficial for patients who have just come from a medical detox or an inpatient residential program. This level of care focuses on more intense substance use disorders and also treats co-occurring mental health disorders many patients may be experiencing. Both of these treatment programs take place in a clinical outpatient environment where patients spend most of the day.

Residential/Inpatient Services

In this level of care, patients are more intensely cared for and monitored. Participants will live in a medically managed environment under 24-hour supervision with program length varying from patient to patient. After medical detox has been completed, residential inpatient care is the next step in the rehab treatment program. Patients reside in a more home-like setting as they begin a new process of healing after the initial detox. During this stage of care, patients are usually still very vulnerable to substance abuse relapse and need continued supervised care to remain abstinent from drugs and alcohol.

Medical Withdrawal Management Inpatient Services

Patients going through detox and experiencing withdrawal symptoms are candidates for medically managed intensive inpatient care. In this level of care, patients receive around the clock care, carefully prescribed medications and intense counseling. Daily assessments are made by medical physicians and nurses to determine the health status of each patient. This phase is usually reserved for patients who are in the initial stages of rehab and need to detox from their addictive substances.

Addiction Recovery Support Groups

Support groups are not a substitute for medically managed drug and alcohol addiction treatment. They are simply an additional resource for those in addiction recovery. The majority of support groups are self-help lead or 12-step programs created to encourage successful recovery in a supportive community environment. Some patients choose to participate in support groups during active recovery, while others seek out the programs after formal treatment.

Some of the most common support groups include Alcoholics Anonymous, (AA) Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and Marijuana Anonymous (MA). These support groups follow the 12-step guide. Originally made popular by the faith-based AA program, other substance support groups have also incorporated the same steps into their addiction recovery support programs. The 12 steps of AA are as follows:

  1. We admit we are powerless over alcohol
  2. Come to believe there is a power greater than ourselves
  3. Make a decision to turn to the greater power’s will
  4. Make a search and moral inventory of ourselves
  5. Admit to the greater power, to ourselves and other people our faults of character
  6. Be ready to submit to the greater power
  7. Humbly ask the greater power to remove our shortcomings
  8. Make a list of all the people we have wronged and make amends to them
  9. Make direct amends whenever possible
  10. Continue to take personal inventory of our morals
  11. Prayer and meditation
  12. Have a spiritual awakening

Another popular support program called SMART Recovery is a science-based program that focuses on the idea of self-empowerment as the main driving force to help those with addiction problems recover. SMART stands for Self-Management and Recovery Training and features a four-point program. The key areas of focus according to the SMART Recovery program include:

  1. Building and maintaining the motivation to change
  2. Coping with urges to use
  3. Managing thoughts, feelings and behaviors
  4. Living a balanced, positive and healthy life

Addiction not only affects the person who is in addiction rehab, but it also affects friends, family and loved ones of the individual. Support groups such as Al-Anon and Nar-Anon are programs directed on helping family members address and recover from the effects of their loved ones addiction. In many cases family members of those recovering from an addiction are encouraged to seek out support groups in order to better understand their loved one and understand their own trauma stemming from the addiction.
