What is Drug and Alcohol Rehab?
Drug and alcohol rehab is the process where individuals learn to improve their health and wellbeing to live without the dependency of harmful, mind-altering substances. Rehab usually takes place in a safe and structured environment under the supervision and guidance of expert medical physicians, psychiatrists, therapists, and various rehab clinicians. Individuals who suffer from substance use disorder (SUD) or alcohol use disorder (AUD), benefit from the professional assistance of drug and alcohol rehab treatment programs to improve their lives.
Rehab treatment is individually targeted to the needs of each patient. Once admitted into a rehab program, the first step will be to fully detox from any addictive substances. Residential inpatient is the next level of care where patients will begin therapeutic treatment methods to address any co-occurring mental health conditions that are often coexisting with those who suffer from substance addiction.
In the next level of care, individuals will begin outpatient treatment in partial hospitalization programming (PHP) and intensive outpatient program (IOP). During outpatient treatment, patients will continue to receive therapeutic care as well as have access to various aftercare services as they prepare to transition back into daily life activities. Throughout each step of the process, rehab clinicians guide patients as they learn to live without the dependence of drugs and alcohol.
Who is a potential candidate for Drug and Alcohol Rehab?
For those who have become physically and emotionally dependent on drugs and alcohol and are unable to perform daily functions without it, those individuals are the best candidates for rehab. Not only can these substances create a physical dependency, but with excessive usage, can alter brain functions and begin to affect an individual’s mental health wellness. When this occurs, patients are often diagnosed with co-occurring mental health disorders and it is often a key factor in recognizing a candidate for drug and alcohol rehab.
Drug and alcohol addiction can affect anyone: men, women and young adults. Because each group of people have specific life experiences and challenges related to their addiction, targeted treatment plans are the key to their recovery process. At Hotel California by the Sea, we offer individualized and gender specific treatment plans for all of our patients. We strive to fit the needs of all our patients in hopes of helping them find the help and guidance they need to live a happier and healthier life.
What types of addictions are treated at Rehab?
Our drug and alcohol rehab facility treats a variety of substance abuse addictions. Some of the most common addictions we treat include: alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, heroin, Adderall and Vyvanse, oxycodone and fentanyl, and Xanax and Klonopin. We offer specialized treatments for patients seeking treatment for AUD and SUD. We also have treatment programs for patients suffering from trauma related addictions and other co-occurring mental health conditions. Specialized and targeted treatment methods are key to effective and long-lasting recovery treatment.
Alcohol Rehab
Alcohol addiction is one of the most common forms of substance addiction in the United States. AUD is defined by the inability to stop or control the consumption of alcohol to the point where it negatively affects a person’s physical, social and emotional wellbeing. The signs to look for when identifying a person who may have an alcohol addiction include:
- Individual has given up activities they once enjoyed in or to drink
- Individual continues to drink despite it making them feel more emotionally unstable
- Individual begins experiencing an uncontrollable physical urge and dependence to drink
Alcohol rehab centers provide patients with targeted treatment programs that address issues around AUD. Patients will initially detox with the help and guidance of medical professionals and if needed withdrawal treatment methods such as medication assisted treatment (MAT) will be implemented. Patients will be under 24/7 care initially and as they gradually move to lower levels of treatment and eventually begin addressing the psychological aspect of their addiction through cognitive therapies.
Prescription Drug Rehab
Prescription drug abuse is another commonly seen addiction in the United States where individuals usually move on to “harder” drugs such as fentanyl and heroin. Just because the drug is legal, that doesn’t mean it’s always safer. When individuals begin to use the drugs in ways other than prescribed by their medical provider, it can quickly turn into an addiction. Adderall and Ativan are widely used prescription drugs that can become highly addictive and is a common addiction many seek treatment for.
For patients in substance and drug rehab programs, multiple levels of care beginning with detox and inpatient residential are crucial steps in recovery. When moving on to outpatient treatment, cognitive therapies are especially important in addressing any psychological issues and co-occurring mental conditions related to the addiction. Some of these evidenced proven therapies offered in our rehab program include: CBT, DBT and EMDR therapy.
Trauma related Substance Addiction
Addiction and trauma often occur hand in hand. Individuals who experience trauma are often diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or acute stress disorder (ASD). Oftentimes these individuals will turn to alcohol or drugs to provide a feeling of temporary relief as a form of self-medication. These co-occurring conditions are not always a catalyst for each other, but because they coincide with one another, they should be treated together.
Trauma is an involuntary emotional and physical response to a distressing event. Many patients who suffer from trauma also suffer from an alcohol or substance use disorder. Specialized therapies such as EMDR therapy were created to specifically target trauma related addictions and have been proven highly effective. EMDR alongside other cognitive individual and group therapies help patients understand, treat, and recover from their debilitating addictions.
What are the different Levels Of Care in Substance Abuse treatment?
Throughout different levels of care, the intensity of services needed to diagnose and treat drug and alcohol addiction can differ depending on each patient. Upon initial entrance into rehab, a full medical and psychological assessment is made where the patient is carefully treated and diagnosed by an expert clinical team. From there patients can be recommended into the following levels of care: medical detox services, inpatient residential services, partial hospitalization programs and intensive outpatient programs. Usually patients who seek out substance abuse treatments will work their way through the levels of care beginning with detox services and ending with an outpatient program.
Intensive Outpatient/Partial Hospitalization
As the lowest level of care, patients in intensive outpatient programs (IOP) and partial hospitalization programs (PHP), there is a greater focus on cognitive therapeutic treatments as well as preparation for transitioning into life outside of rehab. This level of care requires less hours of treatment and is flexible with the schedule of the patient so they are able to participate in other activities outside of rehab such as their professional career and family responsibilities. Patients often take advantage of services such as educational and career placement assistance, assistance in locating transitional sober housing, or training in basic life skills necessary when leaving rehab care.
Residential Inpatient Services
In this level of care, patients are still vulnerable to cravings and relapse and will typically reside in a 24/7 managed residential location. Patients will receive daily assessments from medical physicians and clinicians where throughout much of the day, they will be participating in various therapeutic sessions ranging from individual therapies, group therapies and sometimes family therapy. In this stage of care, patients can also receive medication-assisted treatments that can be adjusted as needed throughout the rehab process.
Medical withdrawal management Inpatient services and Detox
Patients who are experiencing detox withdrawal symptoms are candidates for medically managed intensive inpatient services. During detox, around the clock care is provided to effectively and safely manage detox and withdrawal symptoms. Carefully prescribed medications and intensive therapy is given to patients to manage any pain and emotionally distressing feelings throughout this delicate process. Detoxing is the first step in rehab and the most crucial step. Therefore it requires the highest level of care from rehab clinicians and is where patients are carefully monitored from beginning to end.
Personalized treatment
At Hotel California by the Sea, we focus on providing the highest quality of care through evidenced based treatment methods as well as gender specific and individualized treatment plans. There is no one-size-fits all approach to substance abuse treatment. Every man, woman and young adult who comes to our program can expect to receive targeted treatments to fit their personalized needs.
We specialize in treating co-occurring mental health disorders in those who suffer from substance use disorders. Oftentimes, individuals who experience mental health issues such as depression, anxiety or PTSD, turn to substance usage as a form of self-medication. In other instances, excessive usages of mind-altering substances can lead to the development of mental health conditions as a result of altered brain functions. Despite the occurrence of a substance addiction and mental health conditions overlapping, they are not always a catalyst for each other. However, because they occur alongside one another, they should be treated simultaneously. Our unique treatment methods such as EMDR therapy and DBT are effective in helping patients who suffer from drug and alcohol addictions and co-occurring mental health disorders.
Our drug and alcohol rehab also offers aftercare planning and services to all of our patients enrolled in our inpatient and outpatient programs. These specialized services help patients as they transition out of rehab care and into daily life situations. Services such as career and educational assistance, assistance in locating sober transitional housing, and family support and therapy services are available to help patients as they prepare for a life without the dependence of drugs and alcohol.
What are local Support Groups?
Throughout rehab stay, our patients are encouraged to seek out and participate in local substance addiction recovery support groups. Addiction can be a lonely state of being and by having a community of like-minded peers, recovery can become more successful with the support of others. These groups can offer encouragement, advice based on personal experiences and accountability to keep one another sober. Some of these support groups include 12-step programs and SMART programs. There are even support groups for families and friends of those suffering from substance addictions. Participating in a support group gives a greater chance of maintaining long-term sobriety.
