Sober October

Dry January is a time to set up the new year on a healthy wellness kick. People participate in this social phenomenon by abstaining from drinking alcohol for the month of January. A new wellness trend has started called Sober October. The idea that people have overindulged during the summer months and are in need of a “detox” resulted in the growing popularity of this new social wellness trend.

The Sober October challenge has one rule: you must give up alcohol for 31 days. The trend originally started in 2014 as a fundraising campaign created by Macmillan Cancer Support, a UK-based charity that provides support for people living with cancer. The campaign’s goal was to raise money and awareness for cancer research and treatment.

It quickly gained popularity in the US and over time, has become another social wellness phenomenon. The movement emphasized the importance of checking in with oneself and examining one’s relationship with alcohol. It is an unofficial observance of temporary sobriety after the excesses of summer vacation, where many people party, drink and “let loose.”

Why is Sober October so popular?

Our culture celebrates and often glorifies alcohol use. It is portrayed as an elevation of mundane lives. Alcohol use is normalized. People engage in alcohol to socialize, connect and to feel like they fit in. However, alcohol is also used to treat feelings of boredom, loneliness, anxiety and depression. It is used to self-medicate when people are unable to cope with triggering emotions.

Problematic alcohol use exists on a spectrum. Some people drink casually. Some people drink socially. And some people drink excessively. Alcohol use can affect the entire body physically and mentally. It can damage your liver, increase your risk of cancer, cause sleep problems, affect your concentration and contribute to mental health conditions like anxiety and depression.

Research has found that taking a month-long break from alcohol, even if temporary, is associated with positive outcomes and a significant impact on our health and overall well-being.

Sober October Rules

There is only one major rule. A person must abstain from drinking alcohol for the duration of the month of October. This means from October 1 to October 31, no alcohol will be consumed.

Benefits of Sober October

Improved Sleep

One of the biggest benefits of abstaining from alcohol for a month is the improvement of sleep. There is a misconception that alcohol can make you sleepy and help you sleep. The reality is, alcohol produces a sedative effect that makes you temporarily sleepy. However, it actually disrupts your sleep patterns and natural sleep cycle.

Studies from Harvard Medical School’s division of sleep medicine have found that even disturbing sleep cycles for a few hours a night can lead to physical health issues like obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and decreased immune function. Abstaining from alcohol for a month can help improve sleep quality and restart the natural REM cycle.

Improved Mental Health

Abstaining from alcohol can show improvements in mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression. Alcohol can temporarily relieve feelings of anxiety and depression by suppressing the nervous system. However, constant suppression can lead to even more damage.

Oftentimes, people drink as a form of self-medication. They are unable to manage trigger emotions due to trauma, low self-esteem or anxiety. Alcohol will only make these feelings worse. Cessation of alcohol, even for a short time, can help a person start feeling better emotionally. The person can learn and practice effective coping skills, engage in healthy distractions, lean into social support and practice more self-care.

Improved Cognitive Health

Alcohol use can significantly impact the brain. It can alter neural pathways and impact cognition. With the absence of alcohol, memory, speech, and overall cognitive functioning are improved. Mood and behavior can also change with alcohol cessation.

A person will have better focus, balance and judgment due to brain cells being able to regenerate and heal. A month without alcohol can be long enough to break the cycle and allow for the brain to create new neural pathways.

Other benefits of Alcohol Abstinence

  • Improved immune function to help our bodies fight off illness and disease
  • Increased energy
  • Reduce the risk of cancer
  • Improved and more meaningful development of relationships with friends and family
  • Increased financial health due to less money being spent on alcohol and alcohol related costs
  • Weight loss
  • Clear skin
  • Lack of impulsivity
