What is Outpatient Rehab?

At Hotel California by the Sea’s IOP Program in Orange County, we offer flexible day or night outpatient programs. Once patients have completed residential treatment, they typically continue outpatient treatment. As patients slowly return back into life, they are offered options to continue their recovery.

These programs consist of PHP or IOP.

Candidates for PHP are usually patients who have completed residential treatment but are at a higher risk for potential relapse. IOP provides stability while a client is fully transitioning back into everyday life.

Patients attending PHP spend 5-6 hours per day, 5 days a week in active programming sessions. These sessions include group therapy, individual therapy, and case management meetings. For IOP, patients spend an estimated three hours per day, 3-5 days per week in the same sessions.

Outpatient care length can vary depending on the recommendations from each client’s recovery plan. At the end of each day, patients are able to return home or stay at our transitional living home.

How are Inpatient & Outpatient Rehab in Orange County Rehab different?

Patients receiving treatment at the inpatient settings receive 24/7 care by nursing staff and treatment technicians. On-site nurses complete daily assessments and patients are seen regularly by the attending physician and their team. Inpatient facilities provide a safe and structured environment to begin addiction recovery.

During outpatient programing , patients can continue therapeutic treatments while engaging in other activities outside of a clinical environment.

Our IOP programs in Orange County do not require around-the-clock monitoring. Patients will receive less intensive care. All patients are assessed by medical physicians and psychologists. This process ensures the step down in level of care is appropriate for the patient.

Psychiatric Assessments while in Outpatient Treatment

While programming at our PHP and IOP programs, regular psychiatric evaluations help our clinicians determine the ongoing treatment plans for each patient. Assessments are completed by licensed physicians. Despite the completion of an inpatient program, some patients may still be vulnerable to withdrawal symptoms or even urges for relapsing. Because of this, continuing treatment at the PHP and IOP levels is highly encouraged.

Because of this, psychiatric evaluations are important to address these delicate situations and medication-assisted treatment (MAT) will be prescribed. Physicians may also suggest different forms of behavioral therapies to address any co-occurring mental health diagnoses. This will help ensure the patient remains on the right track during their sobriety journey.

Dual Diagnosis therapy

Mental health conditions are often linked to or occur alongside a substance use disorder. Patients who suffer from these issues are experiencing what is called a dual diagnosis or co-occurring mental health disorder. Some of these disorders include ADHD, bipolar disorder, personality disorder, depression, eating disorders, OCD, and PTSD.

According to the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, an estimated 9.5 million adults in the U.S. experience a substance use disorder and a mental health illness.

Our outpatient rehab in Orange County specializes in dual diagnosis therapy. By offering addiction and mental health treatment concurrently, patients have an increased chance of maintaining their recovery

Types of therapies used at our outpatient programs in Orange County

Similar to inpatient programs, outpatient rehab relies on various types of addiction treatment options including clinically proven therapies. Patients begin these therapies during inpatient and residential treatment. Despite moving to lower levels of care, patients are encouraged to continue recommended therapies as part of their long term recovery.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) – Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) teaches skills to help individuals struggling with addiction. These skills include regulating negative emotions, being mindful and communicating effectively.

EMDR

EMDR – Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy focuses on helping patients change their emotions, thoughts and behaviors. EMDR is a therapy used to help patients reprocess traumatic memories. This helps them no longer feel fearful or negative towards the specific event. The phases of EMDR are:

  • History and treatment planning
  • Preparation
  • Assessment
  • Desensitization
  • Installation
  • Body scan
  • Closure
  • Reevaluation

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) CBT is a psychological individual therapy treatment used to change thinking patterns and behavioral patterns. CBT helps patients change the ways in which they associate with their addiction.

There are a few core principles of CBT that affect a person’s psyche. Psychological problems are based on unhelpful ways of thinking. Learned patterns of unhelpful behaviors create a negative thought process. Learning more effective ways of coping with problems will help relieve the suffering associated with addiction.

Group Therapy

Group Therapy – Group therapy is a form of therapy performed in a group setting with individuals who also struggle with addiction. These group sessions are a safe and confidential environment for patients to listen, share and support each other in similar situations.

Marriage and Family Counseling

Marriage and Family Counseling Marriage and family counseling is a common form of group therapy. It helps address the issues between the patient and their loved ones. In counseling sessions, patients and their families learn various strategies, techniques and tools to create better relationships

Topics that are often addressed include learning effective ways to communicate and setting healthy boundaries. Families also learn how to work past any setbacks that may occur during the recovery process.

Health and Fitness Groups

Health and Fitness Groups – Improving your physical health plays a large factor in being able to improve your substance recovery health. A combination of behavioral therapies along with physical fitness, helps rehab clinicians create a more holistic treatment plan for patient recovery.
