What is it like in a Residential Treatment Program?
What does living in a residential treatment program look like? Entering addiction treatment can be scary enough. But not knowing what intensive inpatient programs will be like can make clients even more uneasy. Residential treatment programs are a step down in level of care from medical detox. In this level of care, clients will receive 24-hour care and focus intensely on their sobriety.

What is a Residential Treatment Program?
At Hotel California by the Sea, our inpatient residential treatment facility is unique in that we provide a home-like setting for clients to recover. Most residential programs take place in a hospital-like or clinical setting. Fluorescent lights, sterile white rooms and a hospital-type feeling can make it more difficult for clients to feel comfortable. We make it easy for clients to feel at home, at ease and ready to fully commit to their sobriety.
Some clients will be able to have their own rooms, while others might find it more beneficial to be partnered up with another peer. Clients will have access to shared social living areas, with TVs and recreational activities available. Our residential clients also have access to calm and serene outdoor areas.
We provide a private chef to help ensure clients have access to the daily nutrition needed to regain their health, physically and mentally. And we encourage our patients to take advantage of the fresh outdoors and get in daily movement for the body.
Our live-in health care facility provides a safe and structured environment where we provide therapy and other evidence-based treatments. Being in an around-the-clock care facility will help clients focus on recovery without the distractions or triggers of outside life.
Who needs a Residential Treatment Program?
Residential treatment programs are typically designed for those who require more intensive and structured care. This might include those who have just stepped down from medical detox and are still vulnerable to cravings and withdrawal symptoms.
This might also include those with severe addictions that require more comprehensive support and time to make adjustments. Or a patient with intense co-occurring mental health disorders such as severe depression or anxiety, might benefit significantly from a more hands-on approach to recovery.

What a typical day looks like at Hotel California by the Sea’s Residential Treatment Facility
At Hotel California by the Sea, our residential program provides patient-focused, comprehensive care and support to clients at their most vulnerable stage in recovery. Each client will receive a full medical and psychiatric assessment to carefully formulate a treatment plan tailored to his or her needs in recovery. This may include medication-assisted treatments, individual cognitive therapies, behavioral therapies and group sessions.
Clients will have regular assessment check-ups from doctors and psychiatrists. This will allow for any adjustments that need to be made in their treatment plan. They will also have access to case managers and other professional social support services.
Morning:
Mornings start out with a set routine that might include personal time to get ready for the day and a nutritious breakfast provided by our private chef. We might also encourage our clients to incorporate morning meditation or mindfulness exercises to help begin their day on a positive and motivating note.
Therapeutic treatments have the most clinically produced evidence of effectiveness when it comes to treating substance use disorder and co-occurring mental health disorders. Throughout the day, clients will participate in various types of therapies as part of their treatment plan.
- Individual and one-on-one therapy: This can include cognitive behavioral therapy or dialectical behavioral therapy. Individual sessions with a therapist and psychiatrist help clients explore their personal challenges and learn effective coping strategies.
- Group sessions: Group therapy is facilitated by a professional and encourages clients to share experiences and foster support and accountability among the residents.
- Family therapy: Family therapy allows clients to involve family members in recovery treatment. Understanding the dynamics of the family can help the client repair broken relationships or even strengthen the bonds they currently have.
Afternoon:
In the afternoon, clients can participate in skill-building activities, workshops and other recreational activities. This can include physical exercise training, yoga, running, music, painting or taking up a new hobby, whether it’s group-related or individualized. Turning to new activities helps clients learn new coping mechanisms and discover healthier alternatives to expressing themselves.
Evening:
During the evenings after dinner, clients will have opportunities for self-reflection. Residents are encouraged to journal and engage in quiet activities. We also offer group discussion sessions to help clients process the day’s experiences. During this wind-down period, it allows clients to end on a calm and neutral state of mind as they prepare for the next day ahead.

What are the Benefits of a Residential Treatment Facility?
Our residential treatment program at Hotel California by the Sea offers a wide range of benefits to clients suffering from substance use disorder. We are a dual diagnosis program that also focuses on mental health conditions that occur alongside a substance addiction.
We provide a holistic approach to recovery. Our comprehensive care plans address physical, emotional, and psychological factors that impact addiction. Our safe and structured environment allows patients to focus completely on healing without outside distractions.
Being surrounded by like-minded peers who face similar challenges and have endured similar experiences can help bring about a sense of community. Group therapy can help residents build their support system as well as help them realize they are not alone in their struggles.
Residential treatment programs offer structure and routine. This type of environment can help clients establish healthy new routines and habits that are crucial for long-term recovery.
Because clients will be in a live-in facility, they will also have access to clinical addiction professionals. Therapists, counselors, psychiatrists, medical doctors and case managers will all be available to clients. Having access to these professionals helps to ensure inclusive care and support.
