Psychedelic Treatment for Depression
In a breakthrough decision, the Trump administration recently pushed an executive order that would allow more research into psychedelic treatment for depression and other treatment-resistant mental health disorders. Treatment-resistant depression is a serious mental health disorder. An estimated 100 million people worldwide suffer from treatment-resistant depression and half of them are unable to perform basic routine daily tasks.

On April 18, 2026, an executive order called the Accelerating Medical Treatments for Serious Mental Illness was signed by President Trump. This order helps to speed up the research and approval of psychedelic drugs for treating serious mental health conditions.
While traditional therapies and daily medication have provided relief for many suffering from conditions such as anxiety, depression and PTSD, some people continue to struggle with serious side effects that won’t go away. Researchers and scientists have begun innovating and looking for newer alternatives to help relieve the burden. This is where some researchers have turned to psychedelic therapy. The once stigmatized landscape has piqued the curiosity of clinicians and patients alike.
What is Psychedelic Therapy?
Psychedelic therapy is now the subject of rigorous scientific inquiry across many medical institutions, including Johns Hopkins and Imperial College London. It is a new therapy that uses the mind-altering effects of specific compounds as a way of healing the damaged psyche.
Why are these treatments so effective? In order to understand this, we have to look at how the brain of someone suffering from depression works. Mental illness traps the brain in rigid and negative loops. This part of the brain is associated with self-reflection, ego and rumination. In someone who is depressed, this area of the brain is overactive.
When a patient takes a psychedelic substance, the overactive part of the brain quiets down temporarily. This allows for other parts of the brain that don’t normally communicate to start talking to one another.
Psychedelic substances can also act like a fertilizer to the brain and promote the growth of new neural connections. This is also known as neuroplasticity. When compared to general SSRI antidepressants that are traditionally used to help treat depression, psychedelics work a little differently. SSRIs blunt emotional extremes to help manage daily symptoms. Psychedelics address the root cause of the trauma or depression. It gives the brain the ability to create new neural connections that result in cognitive restructuring of the brain.

Trump Administration’s approval for Psychedelic Treatment for Depression
Under the executive order, the Trump Administration has directed an estimated 10 million in federal funds to make psychedelic drugs more accessible and ordered the FDA to fast-track review of drugs such as psilocybin and ibogaine. Psilocybin and ibogaine are currently listed as Schedule I controlled substances. Psilocybin, also known as magic mushrooms, is a hallucinogenic substance. Ibogaine is a derivative of the West African iboga plant, and has been used in the past to help treat specific substance addictions.
Most psychedelic substances fall under the Schedule I category of controlled substances. This means they have no medical usage and have a high potential for dependence and addiction. Because of this, it has significantly slowed down research and studies on their use to treat mental illness. Especially in federally funded research.
The order directs federal agencies to prioritize research on psychedelic treatment therapy and for the attorney general to be ready to reschedule some of these substances once trials have been completed.
The FDA has granted Breakthrough Therapy designation to specific psychedelic drugs. There are now a handful of products currently in the clinical trial pipeline for review, safety and efficacy.

Benefits of Psychedelic Treatment for Depression
In a 2025 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, it showed that a single therapeutic dose of psychedelic LSD could help ease anxiety and depression for months. Other research has found that psychedelic treatments can start to work immediately and last over a longer period of time with just one session. The enhanced effects of psychedelic substances are thought to help break those with depression out of unhealthy patterns of thinking.
Some of the advantages of psychedelic therapy over existing treatments include:
- Therapeutic effects occur more quickly. There is immediate symptom improvement compared to traditional SSRIs, which can take a few weeks to see the effects.
- The side effects of psychedelics are mostly transient and will typically resolve once the drug has fully metabolized in the body.
- Therapeutic sessions are conducted under supervised sessions with psychological support as well as close medical monitoring.
- Even after symptom improvement, patients are advised to continue medication indefinitely in order to prevent relapse.
- Psychedelics enhance rather than blunt emotional processing. The compounds in psychedelic drugs help facilitate emotionally prominent experiences. This, in combination with psychotherapy, will help strengthen the therapeutic alliance and create lasting cognitive and behavioral change.
Types of Psychedelics that are being tested for Treatment Therapy
- Psilocybin (Magic Mushrooms). Psilocybin is the active compound in magic mushrooms and has been showing incredible promise in helping with treatment-resistant depression. Patients who have failed to find relief with other traditional medications have seen significant and long-lasting improvement with just a few sessions of psilocybin therapy.
- Ketamine and MDMA. Esketamine, a prescription nasal spray that contains ketamine, has already been FDA-approved for treatment-resistant depression. There are also a number of off-label ketamine IV clinics that offer therapy-led sessions, where many patients have seen lasting results.
- DMT. DMT is the main compound of ayahuasca. Ayahuasca is a plant-based brew that was traditionally used by indigenous shamans. Today, it is being studied to see how it impacts mood disorders. It produces intense and immersive visions that can help a person confront buried emotional pain and lead to a renewed sense of purpose.

Treatment for Substance Use Disorder
New research has shown impressive results in psychedelic therapy for treating conditions such as anxiety and depression. Clinical studies are now testing how they affect serious mental illnesses in patients whose conditions persist even after completing standard therapy protocol. Psychedelic treatment for depression represents new and innovative methods for long-term solutions.
Despite the positive research, there are still risks of dependence and addiction when taking psychedelic substances. Professional behavioral health programs like Hotel California by the Sea provide treatment for those who have become addicted to highly potent substances.
