Substance AbuseSubstance Abuse

Substance abuse usually begins with recreational use of “street drugs” such as cocaine, methamphetamine, Ecstacy, marijuana, or heroin. Many people are able to use these drugs occasionally without the risk of addiction, but others quickly become dependent on these substances.

This is due to the unique neurochemistry of individuals predisposed to addiction, and once the brain has been introduced to these chemicals, the pursuit of pleasure takes over and is difficult for the addict to control.
