Drug Detoxification Program
Drug detox is the first step towards a healthier way of living. Drug detoxification refers to the process of removing harmful substances (drugs and alcohol) from a person’s body. Detoxification from substances such as opiates, benzodiazepines and alcohol can be incredibly difficult because the person is physically dependent on them. Because these substances can be extremely addictive, detoxing without medical supervision can be dangerous and tragically fatal in some cases.
Patients seeking drug detox suffer from Substance Use Disorder (SUD). More commonly known as having a drug addiction, people who experience SUD are unable to control their urges to excessively use legal or illegal substances despite its negative consequences. These drugs ultimately begin to alter a person’s brain functions resulting in abnormal and sometimes dangerous behavior.
SUD is often associated with other dual-diagnosis disorders and should be treated together. Some of the symptoms of SUD overlap with symptoms from mental health disorders and therefore need a medical diagnosis and professional medical attention. In addition to a medical drug detox, physicians introduce treatments of behavioral therapies to address co-occurring mental health issues.

Different Types of Drug Detox
Drug detoxification is the first and most critical step towards a healthy and happy life without drugs. Some of the common types of drug detox include: medical detox, drug tapering, rapid detox, natural detox and going cold turkey. At our Orange County, CA detox facilities, Hotel California by the Sea focuses on two main effective treatment programs to aid patients in drug detox. Most commonly associated with medical detox, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) focuses on using approved medications in specific dosages to assist patients during drug detox. With the drug tapering treatment method, patients are gradually taken off their addictive substance in a step by step process with the main goal of complete abstinence.
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is the use of FDA-approved medications in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies to provide a holistic approach to treatment. At Hotel California by the Sea, MAT is often used to help patients detox more comfortably from addictive substances. With the help of professional addiction experts at our drug and alcohol rehab center, patients can alleviate their withdrawal symptoms with MAT and other forms of medication-based therapies. Because withdrawal from certain substances can be very dangerous, patients are prescribed specific doses of medication to help them safely remove the addictive substance from the body. Medication-Assisted Treatment helps people safely and comfortably achieve a sober state of mind and resist cravings.
Drug tapering is a technique of drug removal from the body by slowly decreasing doses of the substance to ease withdrawal symptoms. Patients are carefully monitored during this process. This step by step reduction helps ease the discomforts a patient’s body will feel during the drug detox. In tapering, detox professionals will gradually decrease medication dosage to the patient over a certain period of time allowing the body to adjust to life without the addictive substance. The goal is for the body to be able to sustain itself without its dependency on drugs.
Common Drugs treated by Detox
Psychoactive drugs such as prescription painkillers and sedatives are among the most widely abused and can easily become addictive. Both legal and illegal drugs can become addictive when used in excessive amounts. The long term usage of drugs can become brain altering and make it more difficult for individuals to function without it. Stopping the usage of these drugs after long term dependency, can be very difficult physically and emotionally.
Examples of psychoactive drugs commonly abused:
The Detox Process
Phase 1 – When clients enter our drug and alcohol rehab program in Newport Beach, physicians perform a physical and psychological evaluation upon arrival. A biopsycho social assessment (BPS) is performed. During this assessment, therapists and counselors determine if any biological, psychological or social factors have contributed to the patient’s drug addiction. Next, the patient and drug detox team determine the types of treatment that will be most effective and develop a comprehensive detox plan for the duration of their stay.
Phase 2 – Hotel California by the Sea’s top priority is the health and safety of our clients. Our job is to make the process of entering detox simple for the person seeking help and encourage patients to continue long term treatment. All of our Southern California detox facilities are Incidental Medical Services (IMS) certified, where we have medical physicians and certified nurses ready to assist patients through the drug detox process. Our patients will receive daily assessments with a medical doctor to adjust medications accordingly as well as monitor the overall wellbeing of each individual. Nurses and other medical staff work around the clock to monitor vital signs every four hours, making sure patients are able to detox comfortably and safely.
Phase 3 – The length of someone’s stay in our drug and alcohol rehab program or drug detox program depends on multiple factors such as: frequency of use, amount of use, and the progress their body makes on ridding the substance. Discharge from our detox level of inpatient treatment depends on the patient’s state of emotional and physical health as determined by our physicians and addiction professionals.
Our Orange County, California residential detox facilities offer a comfortable and relaxing environment located by the beach. With around the clock staff, a gourmet personal chef, and a calming environment, patients will be able to focus on their health and healing from substance addiction.
Detox Withdrawal Symptoms
Patients in drug detox may experience numerous withdrawal symptoms depending on which substances they are removing from their bodies. Because patients have been dependent on these drugs for so long, withdrawal can be difficult and even dangerous in certain cases.
- Muscle pain
- Hot and cold flashes and sweats
- Increased paranoia
- Increased anxiety
Because withdrawal can lead to dangerous situations, detox managed by medical doctors and healthcare professionals is highly recommended to ensure a safe and successful outcome. For an individual coping with substance use disorder, the body has been subjected to the harmful substance for so long, it has become a “normal” part of bodily functions. When an individual suddenly stops consuming that substance, the body no longer feels “normal” and will go into detox withdrawal. The intensity of symptoms can range from mild to moderate to severe depending on how long the patient has been on the drug, the type of drug, and if multiple drugs were used simultaneously.
Depending on which substance you are detoxing from, different medications can be prescribed to help with the withdrawal symptoms associated with drug detox.
Common medications used to assist with drug detox:
- Suboxone – this drug often administered to help suppress cravings and normal withdrawal symptoms associated with those suffering from severe opiate addiction.
- Valium – a type of Benzodiazepines, this sedative-like drug is used to reduce anxiety often associated with detox from substances such as alcohol and opioids. Benzodiazepines are administered carefully because they can become addictive.
- Lucemyra – this drug is often used to help reduce symptoms related to opioid withdrawal.
- Clonidine – this drug is often used to reduce symptoms of anxiety such as sweating and abnormally fast heart rate, normally associated with withdrawal from opiates.
- Hydroxyzine – classified as an antihistamine, this drug is often used to help with tension and anxiety associated with drug withdrawal.
- Propranolol – similar to Clonidine, this drug is also used to reduce symptoms of tremors and irregular heartbeats. All of these physical symptoms are common for patients detoxing from opioids and other addictive drugs.

How long does Detox take?
The length of a drug detox can depend on many factors. Some of these factors include, what type of addictive substance has been abused, how often these substances were abused, any underlying co-occurring mental health issues as well as the person’s medical history. Detoxing from the actual substance can take a few days, whereas detoxing from the cravings to use the substance can take much longer. The entire process of detoxification can range from from a few days to a few months, with a typical detox program ranging from five to seven days.
For stimulant drugs, withdrawal symptoms can appear within a few hours and last until a few days. The drug cravings from stimulants can continue on for months after initial detox. For sedative drugs, depending on which substance has been abused, detox could take anywhere from five days to a few weeks. For opioids, detox can typically last between five to seven days. However, for those who are battling severe opioid addiction, withdrawal symptoms could go on for more than 6 months.
Next Steps After Detox
Once drug detox has been completed, patients are encouraged to move to the next step in rehab and participate in therapy and counseling sessions to heal their psychological dependence on the addictive substance.
